The State Stud Farm in Đakovo was established in 1506, which makes it the one of the oldest stud farms in Europe and proves the long lasting tradition of horse breeding in this area. Lipizzan horses have been bred at the State Stud Farm since the beginning of the 19th century
The State Stud Farm Đakovo and Lipik uses two locations for breeding and selection nowadays – the stallion stables (Pastuharna) located in the Town’s centre and Ivandvor located in the Town’s proximity. In addition to horse breeding and selection, the State Stud Farm performs horse training, the quality of which is proved by great results at equestrian competitions.
Lipizzan horses from Đakovo have promoted the town and the Đakovština area throughout the world by participating in numerous competitions worldwide. Queen Elisabeth II was so thrilled by the performance of Lippizan horses from Đakovo at the opening ceremony of the Olympic Games in 1972 that she visited the Stud Farm and rode through Đakovo on the famous four-in-hand carriage.
